Brighton writer Alison Goodman on launching the National Year of Reading.I GREW up with a love of reading, which I credit to my parents because they always read to me from a very young age.
I also had a wonderful primary school teacher, Mrs Currer, who used to put on character voices and made books come to life for me.
It’s hard to pick favourites, but I always loved Anne of Green Gables and the Magic Faraway Tree series.
I think it’s important for adults to foster that love of books in children. Especially in this day and age, I fear the emphasis on books and reading is being lost on young children.
But I think there will always be a deep enthusiasm for imagination and creativity, and what better way to meet that than through reading and writing?
I have taught creative writing and found it delightful to explore imagination through teaching the craft to others. It takes a lot of energy but afterwards I always feel renewed and have more to give to my own work.
I’m pleased 2012 will be the National Year of Reading because it encourages a focus on reading for the joy of it again. So I was thrilled to be invited to launch the National Year of Reading at my local library.
The event will be held on Valentine’s Day, which also coincides with Library Lovers Day.
I will be speaking about love at the launch and how I approach writing about love for different audiences and genres. It’s a chance for me to share my experiences as a reader and writer.
My past works have explored relationships and fit in to different genres. My books range from young adult science fiction to fantasy.
I have also started working on a new three-part series, and spend a lot of time writing in the many great cafes in Brighton.Marmalade is my favourite.
As all writers know, it’s very important to have a good coffee shop nearby. We’re spoilt for choice here.
The National Year of Reading will be launched at the Brighton Library, 15 Wilson Street, Brighton on Tuesday, February 14 from 2pm–3pm. Entry is free.
