Illegal rubbish piles rise in Kingston

13 Feb, 2012 10:56 AM
REPORTS to Kingston council about illegal rubbish dumping have jumped 75 per cent following a hidden camera trial and media coverage.

Mayor John Ronke said reported incidents increased from an average 100 a month to 175 in January.

He said research showed rubbish attracted more rubbish, so if dumped waste was picked up quickly the chance of further dumping decreased.

The council collects about 35 tonnes of illegally dumped rubbish each month, costing about $150,000 annually.

Illegal dumping can be reported by calling 1300 653 356.
