BICYCLE Network Victoria has dubbed 2012 ‘‘the Year of the Door,’’ with a new campaign aiming to reduce the number of cyclists knocked down by car doors.
The multimedia campaign, due to start in the next few weeks, will target Melbourne’s top three spots for “dooring”: St Kilda Road, Brunswick Street in Fitzroy, and Chapel Street from South Yarra to Windsor.
Meanwhile, Bayside and Kingston have also flagged education programs targeting drivers and cyclists on Beach Road.
Bicycle Network Victoria spokesman Gary Brennan said the organisation’s Operation Door Knock was a response to a spike in doorings in recent years.
Mr Brennan said 171 cyclists were hit by car doors in 2009 and 161 in 2010.
He said a key part of the campaign involved promoting Europe’s ‘‘leading with the left’’ concept. The concept involves the driver opening the car door with their left hand, forcing them to swivel in their seat so they are better positioned to look for bikes. It also makes it difficult for the driver to open their door as widely.
‘‘The campaign will also remind riders to stay out of the door zone so as to reduce the chance of being surprised by an opening door,’’ he said.
Coroner Helen Coonan, in her findings from the investigation into the death of James Bernard Cross, who was killed after a car door knocked him into the path of a truck in Hawthorn in 2010, recommended BNV and VicRoads work to reduce doorings through education.
VicRoads plans to launch a driver and cyclist awareness strategy in the coming months.
